Welcome to the Social Care Institute for Excellence (SCIE)
The Social Care Institute for Excellence (SCIE) was established by Government in 2001 to improve social care services for adults and children in the United Kingdom. We achieve this by identifying good practice and helping to embed it in everyday social care provision.
SCIE works to disseminate knowledge-based good practice guidance; involve service users, carers, practitioners, providers and policy makers in advancing and promoting good practice in social care; enhance the skills and professionalism of social care workers through our tailored, targeted and user-friendly resources.
New corporate strategy
A new booklet outlines SCIE’s principles, priorities and direction for the next three years.
During 2008–11, SCIE will develop and deliver a robust, clear framework for the identification and dissemination of knowledge.
This good practice framework will capture and co-produce knowledge about good practice, communicate knowledge, evidence and innovation and catalyse change.
Information booklet for older people on hospital stays
'Helping you through a hospital stay: Advice from older people' offers advice to older people on what to expect when entering, staying in and leaving hospital. SCIE recognises that local information is vital, so we have made the artwork for the booklet available online.
Organisations can download, personalise and professionally print their own copies. It will be especially useful for information leads in NHS trusts, adults’ services social workers and providers of older people’s services.

Support for children of prisoners
A new resource guide from SCIE outlines findings from practice across the UK and makes specific recommendations for statutory and voluntary children services, local safeguarding children’s boards, prison services, Sure Start children’s centres, health and education and central government.
The resource brings together evidence about strategy, policies and procedures, funding, training and partnerships. It highlights how more needs to be done to consider the specific needs of this group and the role that the voluntary sector and local authorities can play in directing people to appropriate services.
