Disabilities
Although some adults with disabilities have already taken up direct payments, individual budgets will offer new opportunities for independent living to more people. Disability services will need to adapt to changing priorities brought about by the move to personalised services. Many adults with disabilities are parents and need support so that they can fulfil their parenting role. Good support is dependent on a close working relationship between adults' services and children's and families services.
People with learning disabilities want to lead fulfilling and independent lives - with support where necessary. They want to be active in their communities and rather than have day services provided for them, prefer to take up community-based opportunities in education, work and leisure. They also want to have a say in the planning and delivery of services. Through self-advocacy people with learning disabilities can influence the development of social care provision.
