SCIE’s work on adults' services - ongoing work
Involving service users, carers and stakeholders in SCIE's work - Partners' Council (Project: 1.01)
SCIE will continue to work with its Partners' Council which advises SCIE on its priorities, programmes and performance. Its purpose is to ensure that SCIE's work reflects the needs of people in the social care sector, especially that of service users and carers.
Exploring the participation of service users who are seldom heard (Project: 1.10)
This project builds on Position paper 3: Has service user involvement made a difference to social care? It will identify what is meant by the participation of services users who are seldom heard and who agencies find difficult to engage; identify barriers to participation for this group; and to present a framework for facilitating the participation of seldom heard users.
Supporting self advocacy for people with learning disabilities (Project: 5.07.02)
The overall aim of this commission is to build on the work of SCIE's position paper which focussed on the role of supporters in enabling people with learning disabilities to shape and develop social care. The knowledge review will have a different focus: the role of advocacy in supporting people with high support needs to shape their social care through person centred planning and enabling them to contribute to the development of social care services.
Commissioning services for people with learning disabilities and complex needs or challenging behaviour (Project: 5.15)
This knowledge review will look at commissioning, providing and regulating services for people with learning disabilities and complex needs or challenging behaviour. It will describe what knowledge is available, highlight the evidence that has emerged and draw practice points from the evidence.
Mapping good practice in social care work with refugees and asylum seekers (Project: 1.14)
The first part of this project is a systematically conducted brief focused research review to inform the second part of the project which is the development of a good practice guide on social care and work with refugees and asylum seekers. The review is to draw on evidence of good practice in the context of meeting the social care needs of refugees and Asylum Seekers.
Black and minority ethnic older people (Project: 5.22)
This work focuses on depression in black and minority older people - identified as a significant topic by key stakeholders and of importance in current policy and practice debate. The first phase of work involves producing a systematic map of the literature in the field which will help determine priority topics for further enquiry. Desired outcomes are the development of policy and practice guidance that will better address the gaps in service provision for BME elders.
The recovery approach in community-based vocational and training adult mental health day services - knowledge review (Project: 5.20)
This knowledge review will focus on the area of meaningful occupation and training in the reshaping of mental health day services. The opportunity to have meaningful occupation (including paid and voluntary employment) and access to suitable training and support to achieve this is part of the recovery model. The knowledge review aims to explore how the recovery approach can operate in community-based vocational and training adult community mental health services.
Approved social work lead professional national network (Project: 5.21)
SCIE has supported this network for a second year to promote discussion and information sharing for those in this key role in Mental Health Trusts on implementation of key legislation and policy (Mental Capacity Act 2005, Mental Health Act 2007 and self directed support). SCIE has supported 2 events in 2008 with a focus on the interface between the MCA /MHA and the implementation of the MH Act 2007.
Supporting the implementation of the Mental Capacity Act 2005 (Project: 5.28)
The Department of Health and SCIE are developing a series of events and resources to support the Mental Capacity Act Implementation Programme. This will include:
- awareness raising of the Act
- specialised guidance
- studies of the immediate impact of the Act.
This work will complement the existing range of training materials already available at http://www.scie.org.uk/publications/misc/mca.asp
