Part of Mental Capacity Act (MCA)
E-learning resource providing an introduction and guide to the Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DOLS). Introduced in 2009, DOLS aim to protect the rights of people who may lack capacity to make critical decisions, and to ensure that the care and treatments they receive is in their best interests. The resource looks at what a deprivation of liberty is; how to apply for a standard authorisation; safeguards under a standard authorisation; and concerns about unlawful deprivation of liberty. The resource is aimed at all staff working with people who lack or may lack capacity in the health and social care sectors. This includes paid and unpaid carers as well as Families. It will also be useful for trainers and students. The resource is one of nine modules Mental Capacity e-learning series.
