Joint working to deliver better care

Short report of joint event organised by London Health and Care Integration Collaborative, SCIE and PPL on the theme of joint working to deliver better care. The event was attended by over 70 people in London with an interest in or involved in delivering integrated care. It aimed to enable participants to hear the views of experts, share learning and practice about what works, and learn about practical steps they can take to develop joint working and ensure it works effectively. Areas covered included developing an effective communications and engagement strategy, leading co-ordinated, co-located teams, and co-producing change with people who use services. The report provides summaries of the plenary sessions and discussion at the event. Key messages include, that: prevention, early intervention and integrated care are all linked; leaders are able to look beyond their own organisation to the needs of the system overall; we need to see communities and people as assets with contributions to make; and that getting staff buy in and valuing staff contributions and ideas is critical.

The Care Act: new opportunities for the voluntary, community and social enterprise sector

Reports on a roundtable event, jointly hosted by the Social Care Institute for Excellence (SCIE) and Madano, to discuss the impact of the Care Act on the voluntary, community and social enterprise (VCSE) sector and the new opportunities it offers. Issues discussed include: the opportunities and challenges of the prevention and well-being agenda, what the Care Act means for the type of services that the VCSE sector provides, what the Care Act means for commissioning practice, what enables greater engagement between the VCSE sector and other and the barriers to greater engagement. Key messages from the discussion include: the importance of co-production and design; for the VCSE sector to work together to develop a holistic response, rather than creating a competitive culture; for commissioners and providers to understand where preventative care 'fits'; cross-discipline working which focuses on outcomes; and the need for real cultural and behavioural change, with a willingness for commissioners and the VCSE sector to work together.

Technology changing lives: how technology can support the goals of the Care Act

Reports on the key messages from a roundtable discussion on technology in social care and how it can help support the goals of the Care Act. The event was jointly hosted by the Social Care Institute for Excellence (SCIE) and the Department of Health and is one of a series of roundtable discussions exploring how to improve care and support at a time of growing demand, demographic change and financial constraint. Key messages from the event are reported, and include: the need to establish a national and local vision; use technology to solve a specific problem; the need to test and co-produce technological and digital solutions with people who use services and carers; the need to develop knowledge and skills in the social care sector; the importance of digital inclusion; the role of technology in data-sharing and decision-making. The report includes summaries of presentations from Jon Rouse, Keith Spink, Baroness Martha Lane-Fox, Jim Thomas, Madeline Starr and Charlotte Black. The roundtable has also used to help inform the thinking of the National Information Board.

Leading the Care Act: roundtable event held on 5 March 2015

Reports on the key messages from a roundtable discussion which looked at how leadership within social care needs to change if the Care Act is to improve people's lives. The event was hosted by the Social Care Institute for Excellence (SCIE) and attended by key players in care and support, including people who use services, carers, commissioners, workforce development leads, care providers and policy makers. The report includes the presentations of speakers Baroness Sally Greengross, David Pearson, Professor Martin Green, and Sharon Allen; views from the roundtables; and key messages. Key messages from the event are summarised in four key areas: challenges and opportunities; the role of leadership; systems leadership; co-production with people who use services and carers; and leadership style, skill and values. Delegates concluded that leaders need to be good at achieving strategic and cultural change, and felt that it is good leadership that makes the difference to people’s lives – not just developments like pooled budgets or better IT systems.

Community-led care and support: a new paradigm

Reports on the key messages from a roundtable discussion on community-led care. The event was hosted by the Social Care Institute for Excellence (SCIE) and is one of a series of roundtable discussions exploring how to improve care and support at a time of growing demand, demographic change and financial constraint. The discussion aimed to identify, celebrate, support and learn from community-led activity and support and identify practical steps stakeholders can take to support community-led services. The report includes summaries of the presentations from those attending from the organisations: Skillnet Group Community Interest Company, Community Catalysts, Carers UK, Sheffield City Council, and Lloyds Bank Foundation. It also includes views from the round table. Key messages from the event are summarised in four key areas: the positive impact of community-led services; challenges and barriers; building and sustaining community-led services, and enabling community-led services to thrive. The roundtable identified the need to reduce the unnecessary barriers that small, local, user-led services often face in terms of regulations and in building up evidence to support commissioning and investment.
