  • SCIE supporting new role of nursing assistants 27 August 2015Open

There’s a national shortage of nurses across the country and that’s having a big impact on the NHS. Care provider HC-One is addressing this by supporting nursing assistants to take on some of the roles that nurses have predominately done. SCIE is supporting this initiative by conducting an independent evaluation of the Care Assistant Development Programme, which we will report early next year.

  • Care Act and West Midlands ADASS 12 August 2015Open

SCIE is working with the West Midlands ADASS to share emerging practice on Care Act implementation. As well as contributing learning from our national programme of support on the Care Act, we will also learn from colleagues in the West Midlands.

We are pleased to be working with SCIE on the ongoing implementation of the changes introduced by the Care Act. We believe it provides a real opportunity to share emerging good practice from the region with the expertise, reputation and access to national good practice that SCIE provide.

Richard Harling, West Midland’s Care Act Lead and Director of Adult Services and Health at Worcestershire County Council.

  • New end of life care consultation 29 July 2015Open

Care of the dying adult: draft guideline consultation. The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) is asking for views to improve the care of adults in their last few days of life. The BBC is reporting today that the wide-ranging draft consultation is intended for patients, relatives, hospitals, hospices and others involved in end-of-life care. Social care plays an important role in palliative care. It’s vital that social care and health professionals who work with people at the end of life and their families have access to high quality resources and information so they can give the best care possible. The consultation closes on 9 September 2015 at 5pm.

  • Change management in social care 30 June 2015Open

Achieving successful organisational change is a core responsibility for all adult social care managers. A new digital resource, launched today, is designed to support managers working in social care to deal with change within their organisations. They will become more confident in selecting approaches and tools that will assist them in ‘change management’. Until now, there haven’t been many resources to support managers. So, the new resource and film, from the Social Care Institute for Excellence and in partnership with the Universities of Birmingham and Middlesex, addresses this. It offers support for managers in care services, local authorities and integrated health and social care services. Managing change is challenging but the resource can build your knowledge, skills and confidence.

People can really benefit from online learning like this. They can remind themselves on how change can feel and they can find out how managers can be supported to adjust to change, and to recognise the vast wealth of skills they and their workforce possess. I’ve very impressed by this new resource.

Tony Waterfield, senior practitioner at Solihull council.

  • The College of Social Work to close 26 June 2015Open

Sadly, it’s been announced that The College of Social Work is to close. The College was set up to assist in the development of, and to promote the voice of, the profession. SCIE's Chief Executive, Tony Hunter, told the Guardian: “This is a difficult time for social workers and The College itself. The important issue now is to ensure that the good work of The College is retained and built on in the future, so that the social work profession continues to be supported and strengthened to carry out their critical role.”
