SCIE consultant wins MBE in New Year Honours List
5 January 2005
Don Brand, a consultant to the Social Care Institute for Excellence (SCIE), has been awarded an MBE for his services to social care in the New Year Honours List.
Don has spent more than 35 years working in the social care field. He has spent 20 years in social work practice and management in Oxford and Kent. He was also Deputy Chief Inspector in the former Social Services Inspectorate at the Department of Health (DH).
Following this, Don spent five years at the former National Institute for Social Work (NISW) where he was involved with setting up the General Social Care Council, Topss England and SCIE.
At SCIE, Don has been working on SCIE's strategies for putting service users at the heart of its work; was involved in a project looking at the involvement of service users on the boards of the new social care regulatory bodies; has developed, consulted on and implemented SCIE's Partners' Council; and most recently has been working on SCIE's Looking to the future project on the development of social care for children, adults and families which has contributed significantly to the forthcoming Green Paper on adult social care.
Speaking about his MBE, Don said, "I was surprised and very pleased to be awarded an MBE in the New Year Honours. Social care is an undervalued service whose staff get all too little public recognition for the essential and difficult work they do. SCIE is trying to put that right, working with people who use and provide services to spread good practice and improve the reputation of social care. I hope this award will contribute to that process."
