SCIE appoints new board member

27 May 2005

The Social Care Institute for Excellence (SCIE) has appointed Ziggi Alexander CBE to its Board of Trustees.

Ziggi has a proven record of success in strategic management at the centre of politically and managerially complex organisations.

She currently holds a varied portfolio of roles in the public and private sectors, comprising board positions and consultancy assignments, including the Southern Housing Group and Nestor Healthcare Group.

She has also worked with the Department of Health to conduct a major national study on race equality in the NHS and social care.

Ziggi's wide experience in the voluntary, private and public sectors makes her well placed to reflect the concerns and achievements of black communities in the social care arena generally.

As an immigrant herself, Ziggi is particularly interested in changes to policy and practice with respect to refugees and newer communities.

"I am committed to contributing to improving the lives of black older people, looked after children and those suffering from family violence."

"I am also passionate about lifelong learning and I want to see reluctant learners working in the lowest paid jobs in the sector embrace, rather than fear, NVQs," Ziggi said.

Chair of SCIE, Jane Campbell, said, "I am very pleased Ziggi has been able to join SCIE and I am sure SCIE's work will benefit from her wide experience. We all look forward to working with her."

Improving the experience of people who use social care services by developing and promoting knowledge about equality and diversity in social care is a core part of SCIE's work programme.

In particular SCIE is focusing on race equality and the future challenges it presents for social care.

SCIE will be holding a race equality seminar in London on 20 July. For more information call Yvonne Benjamin on 020 7089 6840.
