Options for Excellence review is driven by good practice

20 October 2006

Knowledge and learning in workforce development are central to the Options for Excellence review launched today (20 October).

As the national organisation responsible for developing and sharing knowledge good practice, the Social Care Institute for Excellence (SCIE) made a significant contribution to the review consultation and has welcomed its aims and visions.

Chief Executive of SCIE, Bill Kilgallon, said:

"SCIE's resources on people management emphasise the importance of building a knowledgeable, competent and empathetic workforce. Options for Excellence brings together the key areas for development and has a strong focus on learning and support. It's a clear statement about the vital role of social care and its workforce and a call for that contribution to be recognised and valued.

"SCIE is delighted that its work on leadership, training and service user involvement has been recognised in this review. Our UK-wide consultation on social care research will contribute to the aim to strengthen teaching and our research into technology will support new ways of working. We are looking forward to working with our partners across social care to promote the benefits of a trained, supported and properly resourced workforce."

As part of the Options for Excellence review SCIE was commissioned to consult with adult service users and carers - ensuring their views were incorporated. SCIE's partnership with the national user network Shaping Our Lives was also highlighted as an example of integrating service users views.

SCIE will also work closely with the General Social Care Council, Children's Workforce Development Council, the Commission for Social Care Inspection and Skills for Care as part of the review of the roles and tasks for social workers.
