Diverse Boards are possible and productive
03 December 2007
Commenting on the Association of Chief Executives of Voluntary Organisation’s report into charity governance, Allan Bowman, chair of the Social Care Institute for Excellence (SCIE) said:
“SCIE knows from experience that having a Board which represents a diverse range of stakeholders has a real impact on service provision. We have gone to great lengths to strengthen our own Board – and our advisory group, the Partners’ Council – by ensuring effective representation from people who use, commission, manage and deliver social care services. This breadth of knowledge and experience gives us a real insight into what to improve and how to improve it.
“We strongly support the involvement of people who use services in the management of those services – including at Board level. Our guides on participation and governance clearly demonstrate that this is possible and productive.”

About SCIE’s Partners’ Council
The Partners' Council was set up, following extensive consultation with stakeholders, by the Social Care Institute for Excellence (SCIE) in March 2004 to advise SCIE on its priorities, programmes and performance. Its purpose is to ensure that SCIE's work reflects the needs of people in the social care sector, especially that of service users and carers. For example, the council helps to develop SCIE's work programme.
It is made up of representatives from more than 40 organisations across the UK and includes service user and carer organisations, employers and service providers in the private and voluntary sectors, professional bodies and trade unions, higher education and research institutions, local authorities, regulatory and standards bodies and health organisations. The service user organisations represented on the council include organisations for children and young people, parents and families, disabled people, people with learning difficulties, people who use mental health services, and older people.
