Enriching relationships in care provision - SCIE’s response to CSCI report on dementia care

03 June 2008

The Social Care Institute for Excellence (SCIE) has welcomed the CSCI’s focus on interaction with people with dementia in their new report published today.

Responding to the report, Chief Executive of SCIE, Julie Jones, said: “As well as dealing with this profound and irreversible condition, people with dementia often experience disconnection with those around them which can lead family, friends and paid care workers to misunderstand and exclude.

“Evidence shows that person-centred or ‘relationship-centred’ care promotes wellbeing by helping people with dementia reconnect and enhance their relationships. Care home providers need to ensure that their staff clearly understand these principles and have easy access to guidance on communicating well – which is all available free of charge.”

SCIE has produced a range of resources to help people working in social care understand dementia, person-centred care and the importance of communication. The organisation is now working on a website to specifically support private and voluntary sector providers of dementia care services.
