SCIE welcomes dementia consultation launch

19 June 2008

The Social Care Institute for Excellence (SCIE) has welcomed the launch of the dementia strategy consultation announced today by Ivan Lewis.

Chief executive of SCIE, Julie Jones, said: “This ambitious and far-reaching consultation shows the Government’s clear commitment to addressing the needs of the growing numbers of people with dementia and their carers.

“But although dementia care is coming ‘out of the shadows’, there is still a lot to be done to improve public and professional awareness – especially around early identification, diagnosis and suitable intervention. It is now vital that social care and health bodies step up their work with local authorities and care providers to support the type of localised planning that will help to implement the strategy smoothly and effectively.”

SCIE has produced significant guidance on the identification and treatment of dementia in older people, including joint guidance with the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE).
