New tool to assess participation in people management practice
26 June 2008
A new audit offers social care and health providers the opportunity to carry out a free assessment of how they involve people in the way they run services.
The Social Care Institute for Excellence (SCIE), the organisation responsible for advancing good practice in the social care workforce, has launched the participation audit on its People Management website – a collection of resources, forums and audits that encourage managers to assess practice, voice concerns and share ideas.
The new participation audit supports residential and domiciliary services, local authority managers and other providers to look at how they actively involve the people who use their services in recruiting new staff, providing training and making decisions about policy. The audit gives a score and signposts people to helpful good practice resources.
Chief Executive of SCIE, Julie Jones, said: “Despite a better understanding of the concept and importance of participation, we hear that many providers still don’t involve people in developing the services they use. Many of those that do have participation policies tend to consult using surveys, rather than meaningfully involve people in design and delivery.
“People have an absolute right to be involved in the way that their homes or support services are organised. We want services to understand how to involve people by making simple changes to ways they provide information, arrange meetings and carry out interviews and inductions.”
