SCIE response to today’s Care Quality Commission report
03 December 2009
Commenting on the Care Quality Commission’s first major statement on the quality of adult social care, Allan Bowman, Chair of the Social Care Institute for Excellence, says:
“This is a valuable and welcome contribution to the national picture on the quality of social care. Naturally it’s good to see reported improvements, but as the Social Work Task Force has highlighted this week, no one in the sector can afford to be complacent. Even for those councils and services that are rated as ‘excellent’, there is a general need for constant improvement.
“We at SCIE will continue to learn from the best and share that evidence-base with everyone in social care, health and in areas such as housing and transport. In the coming year, there will be a need to achieve best-value for resources in care and support. It’s vital that all parties, from providers to regulators, from commissioners to service users, are involved in this discussion.
“This is the last year of this style of performance reporting and we look forward to a new ‘performance system’ which will start operating from next year. This will take more account of outcomes, which should give a clear picture of what services are achieving.”
