Revised Dementia Plan
30 September 2010
Commenting on the Government’s Revised Dementia Implementation Plan, SCIE’s Director of Adult Services, David Walden says:
We welcome the update of the existing implementation plan, building as it does on the work of the National Dementia Strategy. I particularly welcome the call to improve not just health, but social care outcomes, for people who have dementia and their families. This is part of a move to providing more personalised care and support services so that people with dementia and their families can have real choice and control over their lives.
The plan has good priority objectives and SCIE’s work, such as the Dementia Gateway, can support them. For instance, it’s vital to ensure that the quality of dementia care in hospitals is improved so that social care is provided on the wards and is involved in the best discharge planning. The use of chemical restraint is a subject that we have expertise in; our Social Care TV films on restraint focus on how to re-examine workplace customs and practices to find new and creative ways to support people to achieve the lives of their choice and to minimise the use of restraint.
