White Paper: Draft Care and Support Bill - Progress report on social care funding
11 July 2012
SCIE’s Chief Executive Andrea Sutcliffe says:
This is a landmark day for social care. The vision, set out in the White Paper, will help raise the bar for quality, independence, information, choice and control; and builds on the work the sector has already been doing in these vital areas. The draft legislation will hopefully provide greater clarity for everyone working in, or using, social care and it is great to see the proposed legal recognition for carers and personal budget entitlements. The focus can now be on what people can do, rather than what they cannot do, helping them to stay actively involved and connected.
SCIE has much to offer to support these proposals; just one example is our evidence-based work on prevention. We have shown how to help people to maintain, or where necessary, regain, independence in the most effective way. We have also shown that prevention schemes can make a big difference to care and support, so that dignity is provided and control is achieved.
We fully agree that better comparison information about care will help to improve service quality and lead to greater choice and control for people. SCIE is already working on one of the White Paper's key actions and later this year will launch the Find Me Good Care website. This will provide comprehensive information about choosing care for all adults in England, to help people to make informed choices about their care and to make it easy for people to give feedback.
