Carers Week 2013 - SCIE comment

10 June 2013

Carers Week 2013 is a UK-wide annual awareness campaign. Its aim is to improve the lives of carers and the people they care for. It does this by doing things like raise the profile of the role of caring in the national, regional and local media and encouraging groups and organisations to take part and organise events and activities.

SCIE is proud to support Carers Week. People who provide care and support, for a relative, friend or neighbour, are often unsung heroes whose own physical, emotional and mental wellbeing can suffer. Carers Week helps to shine a spotlight on the important role carers have and celebrate the enormous contribution they make. For 2013 the focus is on being Prepared to Care – what support and advice is there to help carers, particularly when they first take on that role? This week SCIE is launching a section on our Dementia Gateway website specifically for carers. There will be lots of information to help carers and some practical examples in our Social Care TV films that I hope will be useful and give people confidence in their caring role. I am sure Carers Week will be a success – but caring is not a temporary, one week activity. The true success of this week will be in sustaining better support for carers into the future.
