Dementia Gateway: The environment

Learning disabilities and dementia

Key messages

  • People with a learning disability are at greater risk of developing dementia as they get older compared to the general population.
  • People with Down's syndrome are at significant risk of developing dementia.
  • Care staff need to be aware of the changing needs of people with a learning disability as they get older.
  • The design of the built environment is important for someone with a learning disability and becomes even more critical if the person develops dementia.

To improve the care environment ensure that it makes sense and is calm, familiar, predictable and suitably stimulating.
