Dementia Gateway: Communication in the later stages of dementia
Over to you
Think about the questions below:
- How do I communicate with an infant under the age of 12 months?
- How do I communicate with a person with end-stage dementia?
- What are the similarities and differences?
Your answers to these questions will help you to reflect on what's important in communicating with those who have little language but who need nurturing care. It may help you to develop skills or feel more confident in trying different approaches.

Trainer's notes
This activity can be a useful one to generate discussion and learning among a group of care staff. You will need a flip chart and pens if you want to capture participant's responses.
- Split the group into pairs and ask them to spend a short while discussing the three questions that form the basis of the activity.
- Focusing on each question at a time, invite the pairs to share their answers and write these up on the flip chart. When each page is complete, tear it off the flip chart pad and stick or place it where it will be visible to the group.
- Finally, lead a discussion on thoughts triggered by this exercise about the possible needs of people with end-stage dementia.
