  The Mental Health Foundation have developed a fit-for-purpose online tool for self-audit by decision-makers. This can be used either to evaluate a specific assessment, or as a reflective learning exercise to aid professional development. The tool contains a common gateway leading to separate pathways for people making decisions with a variety of groups. As an open-access resource, the tools enhance involvement and engagement with service users, family carers and others with regard to the issue of assessing mental capacity.

  Completion of the questionnaire generates an automated response that includes:

  1. An indication of the effectiveness of the assessment
  2. Suggestions to enhance practice including links to relevant sections of Code of Practice and other available information relevant to capacity assessments
  3. An option to join an online network of practitioners to share good practice There is the potential to use aggregated data to provide evaluation reports for organisations such as mental health trusts, local authority social services departments and service providers.

• British Psychological Society (BPS) audit toolOpen

  BPS have developed a tool to evaluate the quality of mental capacity assessments. Its primary audience is those carrying out formal assessments of capacity, such as occupational therapists, applied psychologists, psychiatrists, and social workers, but the tool can be used by anyone carrying out an assessment.

  1. For the individual practitioner it provides a statement of the expected standard against which to review their own work either on their own or with their clinical supervisor.
  2. The tool can also be used within teams and/or services as part of both corporate and clinical governance to identify strengths and weaknesses of procedures and implementation.
  3. For professions involved in capacity assessments it provides a consensus statement of expected standards.
