These tools are designed to ascertain whether or not staff have the confidence, knowledge, skills and judgement to assess and act in another person’s best interests under the Act. The tools are designed to inform guidance, and learning and skills developments on MCA practice for the future. East Sussex County Council have also developed a service user choice and dignity tool designed for use in care homes and hospital wards.
- Best Interests Decision Making Questionnaire - This questionnaire is for audit of MCA practice and confidence in social care work, for all relevant staff to complete and return. Collated results can be used to inform current and future implementation. It can also be used as an individual tool in supervision to inform MCA practice and training needs.
- MCA checklist - This tool is for self assessment use by staff involved in decision making for others, from daily living choices to complex human rights considerations.
- Service User Choice and Dignity tool - This is to enable those with memory loss or confusion living in care homes or admitted to hospital wards to take part in person centred care planning. It is a best interest decision-making tool for dignity and choice.
