Organisational change in social care

Developed by SCIE and the Universities of Birmingham and Middlesex through extensive research with frontline staff and service users, this digital resource is designed to support managers working in social care to manage change within their organisations. The toolkit provides a series of realistic scenarios in social care – a care home, an integrated mental team, an adult care team, and a learning disabilities provider – and helps the reader think through which approach would help them understand different change challenges, make decisions and implement and sustain changes. The resource also includes a directory of 32 change approaches and management tools based on a review of current literature, with a commentary on how core social care change principles can be applied to them.

Effective personalisation and high quality care and support can only be ensured when the needs and preferences of individuals are placed at the heart of the services delivered. ‘Getting to know you’ is a free resource to help achieve excellent person-centred care and support by learning about and using one-page profiles. This resource provides a guide through the process of completing a one-page profile for staff, as a first step towards using one-page profiles in work. The resource also contains video examples and written testimonies showing how one-page profiles can and have changed the lives of individuals.

Reablement is about helping people regain the ability to look after themselves following illness or injury. This e-learning resource explains what reablement is, how it differs from home care and intermediate care, and why and how the service should be delivered. The first module is for managers who are involved in the planning and commissioning of services. It looks at how reablement is developing across England, why it is important to offer the service and how to evaluate the success of the service. The second module is designed for care workers. It covers how to carry out a reablement assessment and agree goals and support plans for people, and developing better coping skills for dealing with the emotions that reablement brings out in others and in yourself.

This e-learning module introduces the Family Model, a conceptual framework that can help consider the parent, the child and the whole family when working with families with a parent with mental health problems. First it looks at how some of the common risks and stressors can prevent the needs of family members being met. It also looks at how the presence of protective factors and appropriate resources can influence positive outcomes. The four sections of module look at: the family model; the organisational context; the impact of inequalities; and risk, stressors and protective factors. A list of references, useful resources and a glossary is included.
