Parental mental health and families: working together with professionals

This e-learning module explores the benefits of multi-agency working with families who are affected by parental mental health problems. It demonstrates how to use the Family Model to strengthen professional working relationships and to consider how the 'team around the child' process can be used to reinforce a 'Think family approach'. Parental mental health and families: introducing the family model

This e-learning module introduces the Family Model, a conceptual framework that can help consider the parent, the child and the whole family when working with families with a parent with mental health problems. First it looks at how some of the common risks and stressors can prevent the needs of family members being met. It also looks at how the presence of protective factors and appropriate resources can influence positive outcomes. The four sections of module look at: the family model; the organisational context; the impact of inequalities; and risk, stressors and protective factors. A list of references, useful resources and a glossary is included.

Reflections from the SCIE Learning Together London pilots: an interim report

The Social Care Institute for Excellence (SCIE) worked in collaboration with the London Safeguarding Children Board (LSCB) to pilot the SCIE Learning Together model for case reviews in seven London Local Safeguarding Children Boards (LSCBs). This report presents on some of the interim findings from the (LSCBs) participating in the pilots of the SCIE Learning Together model. It draws primarily on verbal feedback provided by Lead Reviewers over the course of the training, and includes direct quotations. Issues discussed include the engagement of staff and implementation issues. The report aims to share with non-participating LSCBs the experience of taking part in the pilot.

Serious case reviews: piloting the SCIE model

This film for children’s services and serious case review panels looks at the pilots of SCIE’s new systems approach for conducting case reviews of multi-agency safeguarding and child protection work. Care and probation staff describe what it was like taking part and how the experience has improved their practice.

Improving the use of research in social care practice

This knowledge review looks at the use of research by social care staff and how it can be promoted to improve social care practice. It describes what knowledge is available, highlights the evidence that has emerged and draws practice points from the evidence.

Using evidence from diverse research designs

This report provides a number of examples of research that are deliberately or inadvertently developing methods for synthesising evidence from diverse sources. It is a part of a larger SCIE programme of work focused on using knowledge in social care. It provides a partial picture of methodological work synthesising evidence from research using diverse research designs. It looks at work both on the synthesis of qualitative evidence and on the synthesis of qualitative and quantitative evidence.
