A webinar from SCIE, the NHS Leadership Academy and NHS England looking at the SCIE report: Leadership in integrated care systems. The NHS Leadership Academy commissioned SCIE to undertake this research to further expand the understanding of systems leadership and leadership of integrated care systems.
Short report highlighting insights and recommendations from SCIE's work supporting local areas following Care Quality Commission local system reviews. The reviews aimed to understand how services are working together to meet the needs of people who move between health and care services, with a focus on people aged over 65. The recommendations highlight the need for any area developing plans to tackle the interface between health and care to: engage all local partners in planning; clarify governance arrangements to ensure ownership and delivery of action plans are clear; align plans with existing programmes; balance short-term fixes with longer-term improvements; and consider the use of external facilitators to challenge and support planning. The insights will be useful for leaders responsible for developing integrated working within health and wellbeing boards, local authorities and clinical commissioning groups.
Reports on the key messages from a roundtable discussion which looked at how leadership within social care needs to change if the Care Act is to improve people's lives. The event was hosted by the Social Care Institute for Excellence (SCIE) and attended by key players in care and support, including people who use services, carers, commissioners, workforce development leads, care providers and policy makers. The report includes the presentations of speakers Baroness Sally Greengross, David Pearson, Professor Martin Green, and Sharon Allen; views from the roundtables; and key messages. Key messages from the event are summarised in four key areas: challenges and opportunities; the role of leadership; systems leadership; co-production with people who use services and carers; and leadership style, skill and values. Delegates concluded that leaders need to be good at achieving strategic and cultural change, and felt that it is good leadership that makes the difference to people’s lives – not just developments like pooled budgets or better IT systems.
