The psychological impact of quarantine and how to reduce it: rapid review of the evidence

The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) outbreak has seen many countries ask people who have potentially come into contact with the infection to isolate themselves at home or in a dedicated quarantine facility. Decisions on how to apply quarantine should be based on the best available evidence. This review looks at the psychological impact of quarantine using three electronic databases. Of 3166 papers found, 24 are included. Most reviewed studies reported negative psychological effects including post-traumatic stress symptoms, confusion, and anger. Stressors included longer quarantine duration, infection fears, frustration, boredom, inadequate supplies, inadequate information, financial loss, and stigma. Some researchers have suggested long-lasting effects. In situations where quarantine is deemed necessary, officials should quarantine individuals for no longer than required, provide clear rationale for quarantine and information about protocols, and ensure sufficient supplies are provided. Appeals to altruism by reminding the public about the benefits of quarantine to wider society can be favourable.

The guidance provides information to help people with caring responsibilities to keep people with learning disabilities and autistic people safe, support people with learning disabilities to understand the changes they need to make during the COVID-19 outbreak, and information on protecting carers' own wellbeing. It draws on more detailed guidance published by the Social Care Institute for Excellence (SCIE), which will continue to be updated with resources to support those who care for people with learning disabilities and autistic people. COVID 19: how to work safely in care homes

This guidance provides advice for care workers working in care homes on the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) during the period of sustained transmission of the coronavirus (COVID-19). The guidance is also relevant for those providing residential supported living. This resource, which has been designed to be accessible to both care workers and providers, has four sections containing: recommendations on the use of PPE for a range of relevant contexts; explanation concerning recommendations and frequently asked questions; specialist advice relating to care for people with learning disabilities and/or autism; and case scenarios designed to illustrate appropriate use of PPE in practice. The impact of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic on social work practice placements around the world and in the United Arab Emirates is of concern to students, social work educators and service users. This practice note, focuses on the impact of the interruption to social work practice learning for students at the United Arab Emirates University and reflect on the introduction of 'social distancing', a health and safety strategy aimed at reducing the likelihood of the spread of the coronavirus. The paper proposes ways in which students in school placements can continue to develop their social work knowledge and skills ‘from a distance’ and while physically absent from their practice learning settings.

Coronavirus (COVID-19): adult social care action plan

Sets out the government's plan to support the adult social care sector in England throughout the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak. The approach covers four areas: controlling the spread of infection in care settings; supporting the workforce; supporting independence, supporting people at the end of their lives, and responding to individual needs; and supporting local authorities and the providers of care. The action plan applies to all settings and contexts in which people receive adult social care, including people’s own homes, residential care homes and nursing homes, and other community settings. It also applies to people with direct payments and personal budgets, and those who fund their own care. The plan applies to England only.
