SCIE welcomes social work review

11 June 2010

SCIE’s Deputy Chief Executive, Amanda Edwards, says:

The emphasis of the review, on how best to support really effective social work practice, is particularly welcome. We are pleased that the review will build on the valuable work of Moira Gibb’s Social Work Task Force. Professionals working in child protection often have to make very difficult decisions and this is where SCIE can help by providing easy access to evidence, to inform social work judgements. “Think Child, Think Parent, Think Family” is a comprehensive guide for staff working with families where parents have mental health problems. SCIE’s tailored learning materials, for example on communicating with children, support the development of frontline practice.

SCIE’s Learning Together model promotes a new approach to case review and serious case reviews; the model is adapted from experience in other sectors and looks at not only what happened but also why it happened. By involving staff from all agencies and using a robust methodology, learning is stimulated over what helps and hinders good practice. We are testing this approach in a number of regions. We look forward to continuing to work with Professor Munro.
