Social Work Reform Board

14 December 2010

In welcoming Building a Safe and Confident Future, SCIE’s  Chair, Allan Bowman says:

This progress report is a big step towards strengthening social work. Every day, social workers deal with complex situations, offering skilled support, often involving situations of risk to children and adults in vulnerable situations. SCIE is supporting social workers; we are working with the Reform Board; we are supporting the setting-up of the College of Social Work; and we are creating high quality training and development resources for social workers, ranging from guidelines on looked-after children, to help implementing the Mental Capacity Act through to support for newly-qualified social workers.

At a conference last week, SCIE staff were approached by three newly-qualified social workers whose specialism is learning disability. They symbolised the new type of professional that will flourish in this exciting career; they had engaged with our e-learning resources, they are keen to know how to continuously develop their careers and they want to join the College of Social Workers. These young people embody the passion, values, purpose and identity about social work that the Reform Board wants to harness. SCIE will support social workers to achieve the professional capabilities that they need throughout the different stages of their careers.
