Commission on social care funding

20 July 2010

In welcoming the announcement of the creation of a Commission looking at the funding of care and support for adults, SCIE’s Chief Executive Julie Jones says:

We are delighted that the new Chair, Andrew Dilnot, will soon take up his role in a body that is vital to the future of social care. SCIE is keen to help and support the Commission in any way that we can; we are the body charged with identifying and spreading good practice in social care. A new consensus on the funding of adult care services is needed because we have a rapidly ageing population, rising public expectations and increasing numbers of disabled people. To be effective, any funding solution needs to stand the test of time; hence the need for broad agreement on the way forward.

We have said consistently, though, that funding social care is only half of the equation. People want quality services that are personalised and that give them choice and control. The challenge is to provide those services within costs that can be sustained.

We particularly welcome the appointment of two very experienced Commissioners who will work alongside the Chair, Jo Williams and Lord Warner.
