Roles and tasks of social work

Health and Education Ministers have commissioned the General Social Care Council to lead a project which will develop and consult on a statement about the roles and tasks of social work in England in the 21st Century. The Steering Group for the project includes representatives of the two government departments, the Commission for Social Care Inspection, Skills for Care, the Children's Workforce Development Council and SCIE.

A Reference Group enables people using services, carers and a wide range of stakeholder organisations to contribute views and advice as the project proceeds. Formal consultation on the draft statement begins in March 2007, with a view to producing the final version of the statement in the summer.

A specially commissioned Discussion Document, drawing together key themes from the literature and policy framework for children's and adults' social work, is now available.

To ensure the process of developing the statement is open and accessible, other working papers will be posted as they emerge. The documents are provided to prompt local discussion and debate about the future of social work, its contribution to the wellbeing of children, adults and families, and how its roles and tasks relate to those of other groups in the social care workforce and other professions in allied fields.
