The Children and Families Bill - SCIE response about looked-after children

05 February 2013

SCIE response following the announcement of planned reforms to adoption:

We welcome the bill's focus on improving the stability of looked after children's placements, and on speeding up aspects of the process by which a child moves in, or out of public care. A recent research review, conducted by SCIE, looked at specialist, speedily provided services, to support children returning home from care. Those services have been shown to be more likely to lead to stable placement with birth families, compared to "services as usual", and also to quicker placement with alternative families, if return home is unsuccessful or inappropriate.

We also welcome the commitment to collaborative work with different localities to identify "what works" in supporting looked after children, their families and carers. While our research highlights some of the essential components of social work services and practice in terms of decision-making about looked after children, there is still much to learn.
