SCIE press release

Andrea Sutcliffe appointed as Chief Inspector of Adult Social Care

19 July 2013

Andrea Sutcliffe, Chief Executive of the Social Care Institute for Excellence (SCIE) is to become the first Chief Inspector of Adult Social Care for the Care Quality Commission.

Following the announcement of the appointment, SCIE chair, Lord Michael Bichard, said:

Andrea has made an outstanding contribution to SCIE’s future development – including securing our contract for the NICE Collaborating Centre for Social Care, and a £2 million commission from the Department of Health. I am, of course, disappointed that she will not be with us as we deliver on those plans. But I am proud that SCIE has produced the new Chief Inspector for Adult Social Care. This is a pivotal appointment and I know that Andrea will bring her exceptional skills, knowledge and energy to the role. On behalf of the Board and SCIE staff, we congratulate Andrea and wish her well – and we will, of course, continue to work closely with her in her new role at CQC.

Speaking about her appointment, Andrea said:

This has been a genuinely difficult decision, and the role of Chief Inspector is the only appointment that could have enticed me away from SCIE. The knowledge, experience and insight that I have gained and the friends I have made from my time at SCIE will be essential in my new role. I am incredibly grateful to my colleagues and Board members for the support they have given me. I know that under Michael’s leadership the great team at SCIE will continue to play a critical role in helping to improve social care services for the people who use them, their families and carers.

Andrea Sutcliffe joined SCIE in April 2012 from the Appointments Commission where she had been Chief Executive from 2007. Andrea has nearly 30 years experience in health and social care, managing a range of services including those for children and for older people.  Andrea was also an executive director at the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence for seven years.

SCIE will be advertising for a new Chief Executive shortly. Details will be published at
