Regular testing in care homes: SCIE response
03 July 2020
Staff and residents in care homes in England will receive regular coronavirus tests from next week. Kathryn Smith, Chief Executive of the Social Care Institute for Excellence, says:
It’s great news that testing is to be made more regular. We’ve been calling for this and it’s what people should have expected from the start of the lockdown. But this should be just the beginning of the sector bouncing back. However, reform is needed; over issues such as funding - and supporting the workforce more. Again and again, people across the sector having been telling us that they don’t want things to go back to the way they were, with people often being seen as passive recipients of care. Social care is about enabling people to live every day well, whether perhaps you’re a young adult with a disability or living independently in older age. Reform of social care is needed and the COVID-19 crisis has reminded us of this in a stark way.
