Care home visits 'unlimited' - SCIE statement

31 January 2022

From today, people living in care homes will be able to receive unlimited visits.

Kathryn Smith, Chief Executive of the Social Care Institute for Excellence, says:

Coronavirus hit the care home sector especially hard in 2020. Care homes had to adapt quickly at the height of the pandemic, introducing rules and safety measures meant to protect patients and staff. Despite this, many care home residents and staff lost their lives in unimaginable circumstances. This meant especially painful experiences for families who lost loved ones.

Kathryn Smith continues:

Families and friends will welcome the news that COVID-19 restrictions are eased today, Yet the sector's recovery remains challenged by the virus, a workforce shortage, and adapting services to meet the needs of all care residents.

Kathryn Smith, Chief Executive of the Social Care Institute for Excellence, concludes:

The pandemic reminded us about the importance of the social care sector to local communities. People who draw on care deserve to live their best lives. That's why SCIE welcomed the Government's recently announced social care reforms. Supporting people, expanding care options and investing in the workforce are essential components of these plans.
