SCIE’s Athens service for local authority social care staff in England and Wales has now closed.
From 1 April staff employed by local authorities in England providing public health and social care services will be eligible to register for NHS OpenAthens accounts via NICE Evidence Services if they are engaged in health-related business. (Please note that this service is not open to social care staff in Wales.)
NICE Evidence Services provides fast access to authoritative health and social care evidence and best practice through a web-based portal.
An NHS OpenAthens account provides access to NHS national core content (including a range of journals and databases) and any regionally purchased resources where these have been licensed for all, but it does not offer the social care journals and e-books which were provided by the SCIE service.
Former SCIE Athens users will need to register for a new account through NHS OpenAthens as account details are not transferrable. Register online.
Select your region/area from the drop-down list and then select a relevant organisation from the organisational list. Social care staff who are employees of an NHS Trust should register under their named Trust, otherwise select the region and then the relevant “social care provider organisations in [region name/area name]”.
In the professional details section under Department/ward/GP Practice/Clinic add your local authority name.
Enter your personal details, professional group (Social Services) and a work-related email address.
As the organisational restructure of the NHS is not yet complete, you may not see a relevant organisational listing for your area in which case you should contact your regional NHS OpenAthens administrator.
