Safeguarding children and adults: an introduction training course

Course content

The course has been designed based on current evidence, learning from previous cases and focuses on best practice in information sharing and partnership working. Content includes:

• combining key legislation and processes relevant to safeguarding both children and adults
• practical exercises,
• scenario–based discussions
• learning from Safeguarding Adults and Child Safeguarding Practice Reviews (previously known as serious case reviews).

Learning outcomes

Participants will be able:

• to understand the importance of safeguarding children and adults;
• to demonstrate an awareness of factors indicating that a child or an adult may be at risk of, or experiencing different types of abuse or neglect;
• to demonstrate an awareness of key legislation and processes surrounding safeguarding children and adults;
• to understand how to respond to concerns, how to report them and to recognise the importance of working in partnership to keep children and adults safe;
• to understand who safeguarding duties apply to under the Care Act 2014;
• to understand the Six Safeguarding Principles and the ‘Making Safeguarding Personal’ approach;
• to demonstrate an awareness of legislation surrounding consent and information sharing (including the Mental Capacity Act 2005); and
• to understand the responsibilities of the local authority and partners and the importance of effective multi-agency working in safeguarding.

Who should attend?

This course is designed for frontline staff who work directly with children and adults. It is useful for a range of professionals working across different sectors, including:

• frontline professionals and team leaders working for care and support providers
• personal assistants, volunteers, advocates, advisors, support workers and helpline staff
• healthcare staff (GPs, health visitors, nurses, pharmacists, paramedics etc.)
• housing officers

Suitability

The course is not designed for experienced safeguarding leads or local authority staff with additional safeguarding responsibilities.

Duration

The length of the training is one full day, however SCIE trainers can deliver it over two half-days to suit your organisation’s needs.
