25 years of SCIE

The Social Care Institute for Excellence (SCIE) is celebrating 25 years of collaborating and innovating in care to improve the lives of adults and children.

From our beginnings as an organisation established to improve the quality of care and support across England, we have grown into an independent improvement charity and trusted partner across the sector.

While we reflect on the past and how much we’ve achieved, our 25th year also sees us sharply focused on our future: turning best practice and lived experience into practical change and helping to shape the National Care Service of tomorrow, underpinned by National Care Standards.

I am incredibly proud of what SCIE has accomplished in the last 25 years. Since our establishment, we have brought together evidence, lived experience and policy to drive improvements across adults’ and children’s social care.

We have supported major reforms, including the implementation of the Care Act, worked with NICE on quality standards, strengthened safeguarding practice, championed innovation and digital transformation, and helped build the knowledge, confidence and skills of thousands of professionals, from facilitating the creation of The College of Social Work to launching our Care Equity Evidence Hub earlier this year. Throughout our history, co-production has been the golden thread underpinning all that we do, and our commitment to making a difference has never wavered.

Ultimately, SCIE’s vision is for a society that enables everyone who draws on social care to live fulfilling lives. We will continue working tirelessly until we see it realised.

Gerard Crofton-Martin

Interim Chief Executive, SCIE

The Casey Commission and the Government’s commitment to a person-centred, high-quality and home-first National Care Service means this is the most significant moment for social care in a generation. SCIE’s work to support best practice, shape policy, and raise awareness of the importance of social care is, therefore, as important now as it ever was.

Our focus remains firmly on working with the Government, local leaders, people with lived experience and partners across the sector to reinvent the social care system and how we care for one another.

Baroness Glenys Thornton

Chair of the Board, SCIE

SCIE has refreshed its brand and logo for its 25th year, matching its renewed mission at this crucial time for social care. Our refreshed brand is a promise to reach further and create lasting change.
