About the project
SCIE has been commissioned by the Department of Health and Department for Education to manage an ambitious project to improve the emotional wellbeing and mental health support for looked after children and young people, care leavers and children adopted from care.
Aim of the project
The overall aim of the project is to ensure that the emotional wellbeing and mental health needs of children and young people in care, those adopted from care or under a Special Guardianship Order (SGO), and care leavers are better met. We delivered our final report and recommendations in November 2017.
Several recent reports have highlighted that these vulnerable children and young people do not always get the support they need, and can face barriers in accessing services.
The aspiration is that in the future, children and young people in care will have access to high-quality services, based on a clear assessment of need, from a range of professionals working across agencies.
The project included:
- care pathways – focusing on the journey that a child or young person in need of support might make
- models of care – the organisation and configuration of services to ensure the provision of appropriate evidence-based interventions
- quality principles – clear statements and measures that set out an achievable marker of high-quality and effective care
- implementation plans and products to support the use of the care pathways, models of care and quality principles.
