Support programme for independent lead reviewers
Apply to join SCIE’s Learning Together network of safeguarding case reviewers
Consultant reviewers bring important independence and expertise and capacity to case reviews and audits of safeguarding work. Independent reviewers also contribute vital capacity to learning and improvement activities.
SCIE’s support programme for independent lead reviewers includes:
- a practice-based training course in using Learning Together – a four day taught course on SCIE’s systems approach and practice review with group supervision sessions
- an assessed accreditation process completed after the practice review is concluded. The assessment process is certified by the Institute of Leadership and Management
- access to commissions We match accredited case reviewers to commissioners seeking independent consultants for statutory reviews, learning reviews or audits.
- on-going supervision for accredited reviewers of all Learning Together reviews
- a community of practice for accredited Learning Together reviewers – an annual programme of peer support, seminars, short life working groups, and annual conference.
We work with reviewers of adults’ and children’s safeguarding cases.

Selection criteria
Participants in the programme:
- want to use the Learning Together model
- conduct reviews regularly
- are enthusiastic about systems thinking
- are interested in the theory and methodology of reviewing
- share reviewing experiences and contribute to the on-going development of Learning Together.
Conducting Learning Together review requires:
- handling complex group dynamics, including chairing and group facilitation
- strong leadership and ability to motivate others and remain impartial
- good analytic skills and appreciation of qualitative research methods, including validity of multiple perspectives
- collaborative problem solving and enthusiasm for participative approaches
- open-mindedness and curiosity
- promoting reflective learning culture
- report writing with sensitivity to tone and audience
- child or adult safeguarding and/or investigation knowledge
- openness to challenging organisational/professional norms
