Get me to hospital: e-learning resource

This e-learning resource has been developed to support practitioners, families, and individuals in understanding when and how to use the Mental Capacity Act (MCA) to respond to situations where a person may require emergency physical health treatment but refuses to be taken to hospital.

Decisions about conveying people with cognitive impairments to hospital can be complex, involving careful consideration of a person’s ability to make their own decisions, the risks of refusing treatment, and how best to act in their interests. Developed in the spirit of the SCIE guide — which was shaped by people with lived experience, social workers, paramedics, nurses, advocates, and family members — this resource reflects the real-world challenges practitioners face in these high-pressure situations.

It is designed to take around 30 minutes, though this may vary depending on how you work through it, and we strongly encourage teams to use it together. We hope it will prompt meaningful discussions, support forward planning, and help build confidence in making best interests decisions when they matter most.

This course does no not include marked assessments or certificates upon completion and will require being logged into a MySCIE account.
