This free course explores parental substance misuse, its effects on children and parenting capacity and the implications for social work practitioners.
This e-learning resource is targeted at children’s social care workers to help them work more confidently with families where parents are misusing drugs.
These resources might also be useful for primary care services staff (GPs, health visitors, midwives), children’s centre staff and students.
This e-learning course has not been updated since October 2011. It may not reflect current policy but still provides valuable practice guidance.

Module 1: Understanding substance misuse Open
This module provides an introduction to the different types of substances commonly misused and the effects that these may have on the people taking them.
On completion of this learning module you will be able to:

be familiar with working definitions of substance use and misuse

know about the substances that are most commonly misused, and the three different levels of use

recognise when someone may have a substance misuse problem

understand how different substances might affect a person's behaviour

identify the stages involved in changing substance misusing behaviour

consider the range of treatment options and support available to substance misusing adults
- begin to think about the relationship between an individual user and their family/community.

Module 2: Implications for children’s social work practice Open
This module explores how parenting capacity may be compromised and how children may be affected by parental substance misuse.

This module explores the implications that parental substance misuse has for social work practice and to recognise when an assessment is needed.
On completion of this learning module you will be able to:

identify different resources that will support the assessment process

make balanced judgements about any action necessary to safeguard and promote children's welfare
